Leader Recovery Segment:
Torbert dr= 3, fails
All leaders recover on a 1 or 2. So he wouldn't roll again for 4 turns. Note: Torbert is replaced by Merritt, but it doesn't change any leader values so we kept Torbert on map.
Strategic segment:
dr= 6+1 = 7
Union artillery recalled but on May 7 and 11 convert this to Leader Falls Ill.
Leader dr= 6+2=8
Hill falls ill. Early replaces Hill as corps leader, Gordon replaces Early as a divisional leader.
One interesting feature about replacement leaders are that they can't die. So no nervousness about snake eyes during combat.
Reinforcement segment:
Breckenridge arrives in Staunton.
Echols arrives in Staunton.
Wharton arrives in Staunton.
Beauregard arrives in Burkeville.
Hoke arrives in Burkeville.
Colquitt arrives in Petersburg.
Terry arrives in Petersburg.
Wise arrives in Burkeville.
Ransom arrives in Burkeville.
Lewis arrives in Burkeville.
CSA also decided to bring on some special reinforcements. The cavalry brigades of WE Jones, McCausland and Jackson (all manpower 2) will arrive in 4 turns at either Lexington or Lynchburg.
Union reinforcement dr= 4. All 4 manpower go to the Army of the Potomac, will arrive next strategic cycle.
Union special reinforcement dr= 6, NE. CSA has 5 special reinforcements off map, so Union needs a 2 or less to release Crook and Averell.
West arrives in Bermuda Hundred.
10/37 Colored arrives in City Point.
Valley Segment:
VMI Cadets move from Lexington to Staunton.
Bermuda Segment:
CSA defense in the Bermuda Hundred area: Pickett and 8 manpower in breastworks defend Petersburg. 13 manpower
in breastworks defend Drewry's Bluff.
Hinks, Smith, Brooks and Weitzel attack Petersburg.
Ames moves to Port Walthall Junction.
Gillmore, Terry and Turner attack Drewry's Bluff.
vs Drewry's: 24:26 (13) = -1 attack
U4 3D result, Terry loses 3 manpower to 9. This is a major defeat for Butler.
C5 f result, NE.
vs Petersburg: tactical -1, 25:16 (8) = 0 for a -1 attack
U5 2Da result, Hinks to mnlvl 1.
C2 1Da result, Petersburg Militia are KIA. Pickett, Colquitt, Terry and 31NC retreat to Burkeville.
The gamble works. I couldn't risk losing the attack against Drewry's Bluff and getting bottled up in Port Walthall Station. While I'm probably won't capture the bluff this game now that Beauregard has a chance to reinforce Drewry's this will be offset if I can hold onto Petersburg throughout the game. Scott will now be forced to attack into my breastworks if he wants to recapture it.
All I can add is that I am happy with the forces in Drewry's Bluff and Petersburg-as they have thwarted Butlers aggressiveness! I add to General Beaureguard to spend little time formulating any grand strategic move and just hit em hard when you get the chance!
A big win for the Union. The capture of Petersburg will result in 60 to 90 VP for the Union if Paul can hold on to it all game (which is likely). That's an adjustment of at least one whole victory level on its own. Wise, Ransom and Lewis could have all arrived in Petersburg (instead of Burkeville) and driven down the attack odds further -- even given Paul's favorable die roll that would have saved the city. Hindsight is 20-20; I don't think Scott was expecting such an aggressive move. Paul went for two "6 in 36" chances instead of one "10 in 36" chance of taking Drewry's. Technically he did improve his odds slightly and it paid off handsomely.
Depot segment:
County control is rechecked from the start of May 11.
Orange County is now Union controlled.
Culpeper depot is flipped to it's complete side.
The Union Navy marker started the game on the "Transport Supplies" side and cannot be flipped to the "Transport Troops" side until May 15.
Supply Status segment:
Union units in Orange and Spotsylvania county are now in supply. Union units in Caroline, Louisa and Hanover counties are out of supply. Sedgwick's corps is still out of supply and
hasn't foraged successfully so each unit loses a manpower.
Confederate units not in Caroline, Hanover or Louisa counties are out of supply. So all CSA infantry divisions are out of supply.
Ammunition segment:
Union replenishes it's ammo, up to 2 per unit. All Union units have all their boxes unchecked.
Union command segment:
Sigel command dr= 3 - 1 (no major defeats in this theater) = 2, so earns 1 command point.
Butler command dr= 3 + 1 (major defeat at Drewry's) = 4, so no command point.
Sigel will go active, Butler goes passive.
Good, we get to see some action in the Valley next time. Will Breckinridge contest Sigel's advance on New Market? It will be May 15 -- the historical date of that battle. I hope the VMI Cadets are ready!
VP segment:
+3 Port Walthall Station - May 7
+3 Port Walthall Station - May 11
+10 Petersburg - May 11
+15 CSA Complete depot destroyed
+51 CSA losses
-72 Union losses
-30 Union Complete depot destroyed
Equals -20 VP, a CSA Decisive victory at this point.
It may be a CSA decisive now, but if Paul holds on to Port Walthall and Petersburg for the rest of the game he will earn 13 VP each strategic segment. By May 31 (the earliest date the game can end) he will have added 65 more VP, giving him +45. That puts him in striking range of the 120 he needs for victory given the points he will get for controlling counties on the way to Richmond and for having infantry near Richmond at game's end. With the ANV now out of supply, I'd have to say this game is even at this point. Wild, certainly, but there is no longer a clear favorite. Paul's drive south with Sedgwick (leaving the rest of the army in peril at Spotsylvania) was bordering on desperation, will he slow down the pace now that he is back in the game?
